Based right in the middle of New York City, the Radio City Music Hall is a much loved theater. For more than 90 years, people have been attending movies, shows and concerts here with their family and friends. What to Expect at a Radio City Music Hall Show

When you go to Radio City Music Hall concerts, you’ll be seated in one of the best made-for-purpose venues in the world. You can expect excellent performances, with top notch acoustics and lighting, and an auditorium designed so that everyone gets a great view. The Music Hall can hold around 6,000 concert-goers, in terraced mezzanine floors set above a lower Orchestra pit.

The appeal of Radio City Music Hall is its diverse schedule. One day you’ll be marveling at a stage spectacular, the next you’ll be singing along with household names or discovering an indie pop band. The one thing you can be sure of is a comfortable seat and an amazing ambience. Oh, and The Rockettes.

The live events and experience at Radio City Music Hall are truly unmatched. As well as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the venue hosts a broad range of musical performances encompassing a wide range of genres, including rock, pop, and classical. Some of the top artists who have performed at the venue over the years include Kelly Clarkson, The Backstreet Boys, Jennifer Hudson, Justin Timberlake, Tony Bennett, and Katy Perry.

Radio City also hosts Broadway performances and touring productions, including musicals and plays. As well as this, you’ll find family-friendly events and kid’s performances showing here, with Disney On Ice being a prime example. 

Because of the 84-foot ceiling, the auditorium promises an amazing depth of sound for live events. The shape and size of the venue have been carefully engineered to optimize sound distribution, so you’re guaranteed the best acoustics possible – no matter where you’re seated. 

The structure of the stage, also called Great Stage, is made up of four elevators. The top three rise 13 feet in the air or lower 27 feet below the stage. In total, all four elevators weigh a startling 380,000 pounds.

Famous performers at Radio City Music Hall

More than 700 movies have premiered at Radio City since 1933, starring legends like Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers. Other visitors included Jimmy Stewart, Barbara Stanwyck, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Rosalind Russell and many more. Concerts over the years have been given by performers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., BB King and Ray Charles. You might also have seen great operatic tenors like Jose Carreras, or classical musicians like Itzhak Perlman.

You’ll still catch the occasional movie premiere here, but Radio City is now best known for its popular stage shows, concerts, special attractions and media events. After a 2019 renovation, the grand reopening gala featured a host of well-known artists, as well as the venue’s own Radio City Rockettes. The first solo concert after the reopening starred Celine Dion, with subsequent performances from King Crimson and Bjork.

Around the Music Hall

After taking a trip up the elevator at the Rockefeller Center, which travels a total of 67 floors in 43 seconds, you’ll be granted stunning views, including the Empire State Building and Central Park. You’ll even be able to look over the Hudson River to New Jersey, as well as the East River all the way to the Atlantic. 

The music hall’s exterior faces Avenue of the Americas (6th Ave), with its southern side along 49th St and the northern side along 50th St. Your attention will immediately be drawn to the huge marquees which appear on all three sides of the venue. The theater’s main entrance is located at the southwest corner of the building, on 49th & 6th. Once you walk in, you’ll be greeted by the ticket lobby, a dark, intimate space with low overhead light fixtures. 

Many guests have noted that the venue’s ‘little touches,’ are what really make it so special. There’s always something new to admire, from floral displays to art pieces.
